My parents are looking to replace their 06' Ford Five Hundred. I’m glad, because after 10 years and 197,000 miles it’s starting to show its age.
My dad seems to be set on buying a fusion, and had originally been looking at ‘16 Titanium trim levels. With 2017's starting to arrive 2016's are getting marked down. He doesn’t care about the 2017 facelift, so that’s fine.
However, he’s also made it clear that he couldn’t care less about power/performance. He just wants good gas mileage, leather seats, and my mom wants NAV. As such, I’m pushing him away from Titaniums and toward SE Hybrids.
I know, I’m betraying Oppo’s cause.
He’s hesitant, because I think he doesn’t like hybrids. You can’t really argue with the mileage difference between the two though. Even the 1.5 is only rated at 28 combined compared to the hybrid’s 42. Even with the options they want it’ll be $10k less than a Titanium.
(Weirdly, my dad fell in love with the Mazda 6 wagon when he visited me in Prague. If they sold them here he’d buy one.)
Am I doing the right thing by suggesting buying a hybrid SE over a 2.0L Titanium or a 1.5L SE ?
Also, holy crap Netflix just got good. I watched Spotlight last night and The Big Short today. Watch ‘em if you haven’t seen them yet.

Yes

I have a 2013 1.6L SE auto with leather and nav and I’ve been nothing but pleased with it. Often times I wish I would’ve went for the Hybrid just because I’m a cheap bastard and hate paying for gas. But I still average about 33mpg and this is mostly 50/50 city/hwy driving.
Either way you can NOT go wrong with a Fusion. This is no joke the best car I’ve ever had and this is my 6th brand new car.
I’ve always thought Titaniums were a bit of a waste. You can literally get all the same options in an SE but don’t get charged the $5000 premium.
My car is loaded to the tits with the exception of lane departure and self parallel parking and it cost me $26K out the door canadian in 2013.

people should have the car that they need. It just happens that I need Ariel Atom.

You want an X plan code for the fusion? As a ford employee, a friend of oppo is a friend of mine.

The Ford Five Hundred is one of my favorite cars of the past 15 years. Where are you located? How much will they ask for it?
I put 1,000 miles on a Fusion Hybrid a year ago and I was
very
impressed with the car. As well, I think the Fusion’s look great. I think Pops is making a solid choice.

Missouri, they’ll probably trade it in.

A what?

The ‘17 isn’t a facelift, it’s a faceplant.

This is good to hear, and yeah sticker is ~$27k but I’ve seen several marked down to $21k.

The Taurus doesn't get good mileage. If you're in a warm climate, Fusion Premium FWD, is the best car in that segment, in my opinion. If you're in a colder climate, Subaru Legacy or Fusion Premium AWD.

Missouri, it’ll be FWD.

Get the Fusion SE with nav + leather. My mom got the same exact one, 2016 Fusion SE with leather, nav, 1.5L engine. She gets around 30mpg city, 35-37 hw.

It’s probably not worth anything to a dealer though.

My thinking exactly. He commutes daily and drives regionally for work. Thoughts on hybrids?
![]() 07/12/2016 at 15:53 |

Not worth the extra price and you’ll sacrifice a lot of trunk space.
![]() 07/12/2016 at 15:57 |
|
What about the Mazda 6 sedan?
![]() 07/12/2016 at 15:58 |

There’s not a real noticeable price difference locally, the trunk space does decrease from 16 to 12 cubic feet.

I’d still spring for the regular one.

Think of it as a Ford “Family and Friends” discount.
![]() 07/12/2016 at 16:00 |

He doesn’t like it as much as the Fusion. (Also, ‘Murica is a reason)

a discount code more or less - yes friends and neighbors plan

Cool, we do know somebody at a Lincoln dealership. I’ll let you know if they start getting more serious though, Thanks!

Haha, I like it. It looks more like the Aussie Falcons.

just let me know!

Honestly look at the lightly used ones. I see ones here by me with under 20k miles for $15k or less.
I know some people are against used cars but it’s almost dumb to buy a new one at those prices

Yuck.
![]() 07/12/2016 at 16:21 |

He’ll probably go new, especially with 2016 closeouts. I’m seeing new ones marked down to $21k.

Hey, 2017's get twin turbo V6s too.

But that doesn’t change the styling.

If I ever was going hybrid I'd totally recommend the plug in fusion if it's in the budget
![]() 07/12/2016 at 16:46 |

You lose a lot of trunk space, and long distance mileage suffers because of the weight penalty. Also, they’re pretty rare and expensive. Regular hybrids are about 30-40% of cars on the lots.
![]() 07/12/2016 at 17:15 |

If they can stomach it, and only keep the car a few years, might I recommend a VW product? VW’s leaving at least $5k on the hood of every car, plus the Golfs and Jettas get ~35mpg in conservative driving.
![]() 07/12/2016 at 17:49 |

VW’s not an option unfortunately, Big 3 only. I like the Passat (I really wish the Skoda Superb was sold here), but it’s just not gonna happen.
![]() 07/12/2016 at 17:59 |

Would you hesitate to jump into that car and drive it to the West Coast?
![]() 07/12/2016 at 18:05 |
|
Haha, probably not gonna happen. Gas would cost as much as the car.

Fusion is the way to go!

The hybrid already eats lots of truck, and the spare tyre for that matter

I’m a believer in buying heavily discounted new. That way you’re protected by the lemon law if you get a lemon. I once bought a year and a half year old car with 5200 miles on it. It then spent 31 days in the shop over the next 3-1/2 months. I ate it big time getting rid of that car, because no lemon law. I traded into a brand new truck that was deeply discounted because the new ones were about to come out. Best decision I ever made.

If he does a lot of highway driving, then he’d probably be better served by a regular model. Hybrids really shine around town. It probably doesn’t make much difference either way. They’re both good cars.

God, I miss my Five Hundred. I had a 2005.
We just turned back a 1.6L (13) Fusion lease. It was... OK. The Five Hundred was far more present of a car with a much higher seating position. Consider a Taurus as a better upgrade, as I suspect there are deals to be had there, too.
Did 16 Fusions get Sync 3? The nav product in Sync 3 is lightyears beyond what MyFord Touch had to offer.. so much quicker.
Fusion isn’t a bad car, I just... found it a tad mediocre in a lot of ways. We gave our Fusion up for a Focus, and even with the crazy dual clutch automatic, it’s a far more fun car than the Fusion ever was.
Otherwise, good luck. I know this didn’t directly answer your question, but if the 1.6L powered our car fine, I’m sure the 1.5L would be fine in your ride as well, the fuel economy was fine. I could squeeze 36+ out of it consistently on mostly highway runs.

Hybrid: 12cf
Energi: 8cf

Yeah, it’s a mix of driving, it’ll probably depend on what we can find with the closest options to what he wants.

My dad is looking to replace his 2010 AWD Taurus Titanium, and I’ve almost got him sold on a Fusion Sport. Because 325 horsepower discount midsize domestic Audi S4 rival.
